Dr. Howell Answers Your Invisalign Questions
Regardless of what orthodontic treatment method you choose, it is important to Dr. Howell and his team at Wiregrass Orthodontics that you know as much as possible about your treatment so it goes along as planned without any unexpected surprises or occurrences. For our patients interested in improving their smiles with Invisalign, Dr. Howell answers some of the most frequently asked questions about this very popular treatment method that uses clear, removable aligners.
Q: Will I have to wear the aligners all the time?
A: You must wear your aligners for 22 hours each day in order for Invisalign to work correctly. You can remove the aligners when eating & drinking and when brushing & flossing. You can also take them out for special occasions such as school/family photos or interviews.
Q: Do I have to avoid eating certain foods when wearing Invisalign?
A: No. You can continue enjoying all your favorite foods when you're an Invisalign patient as you simply remove the aligners when eating and then just put them back in when done.
Q: Will the aligners affect how I speak?
A: When you first start wearing Invisalign, you may notice your speech is somewhat different. Just spend a few minutes talking or singing out loud. Before you know it, your speech will return to normal.
Q: Can I chew gum with the aligners in?
A: No. Gum easily sticks to the aligners to create a big mess so you should refrain from chewing gum while you have the aligners in.
Q: Can I smoke with the aligners in?
A: Because tobacco smoke can stain and discolor your aligners, we don't recommend smoking while wearing the aligners.
Q: How long does treatment take with Invisalign?
A: Every patient has his or her own orthodontic needs so treatment time varies. You could spend as little as 6 months in treatment or as long as 18 months – it all depends on what orthodontic problems are being corrected and how compliant you are with wearing your aligners and keeping your regular appointments.
Q: How often do I have to come in for appointments during treatment?
A: We will ask you to come into our office every few weeks so we can check your progress and make sure your treatment is on track.
Q: Will I have to wear a retainer once I'm done wearing the aligners?
A: Yes. You will need to wear a retainer according to the directions we give you to prevent your teeth from shifting back into their original positions.
