Protect Your Beautiful Smile
There’s nothing like seeing two rows of beautiful, straight teeth when your braces are finally removed. You’ve just made an incredible investment of time, money, and good brushing habits to correct your teeth; don’t let all that hard work go to waste! While the braces may be gone, you’re not quite done with your orthodontist just yet. Retention is an extremely important part of treatment that ensures your teeth remain straight after braces are removed.
What Is Retention?
Once your braces are removed, you enter the retention phase of treatment. This lasts for a minimum of 24 months and has a tremendous impact on your final orthodontic result. During the retention period you will wear a retainer on one or both rows of teeth. While some retainers are removable, they should remain in your mouth at all times except for brushing and eating. After 12 months of full-time wear, we will reevaluate to see if treatment may be reduced to nighttime wear alone.
Once you have your retainer, it’s important to take good care of it. Here are some general guidelines:
- Always keep your retainer in its special carrying case when not in use.
- Clean your retainer daily by brushing it with dial soap or toothpaste and warm water.
- Do not wear when eating, brushing, swimming, or playing contact sports.
- Wear full-time for the first 12 months of treatment.
