Adult Treatment

s-perfectSmile2One of our main goals here at Wiregrass Orthodontic Specialists is to provide high-quality orthodontics, such as braces and Invisalign, for all of our patients who located in and around Dothan, Enterprise, and Ozark, AL. Our orthodontic services are catered to patients of all ages, from child to adult. Unfortunately, many adults don’t take advantage of these services because they feel like they’re too old for braces. Well, we’re here to say that’s completely wrong! You’re never too old for braces, and if you’ve ever considered what it would be like to have a straighter and healthier smile, we encourage you to stop by and visit your orthodontist sometime.

The Differences with Adult Treatment

Even though teeth can be straightened no matter how old a patient is, there are still two main differences with adult treatment when compared to adolescent and early treatment. The first is that adults have already finished their growth and development of the jaws. What this means is that changing the jaw structure can’t be accomplished with the use of orthodontics in the same way that it can for a child who’s still growing.

Additionally, gum disease is more frequent in adults, which is a major deal since gum health plays a vital role in orthodontic treatment. If a patient’s gum tissues aren’t healthy during treatment, bone loss can occur, which can weaken the long-term prognosis of the teeth. Before orthodontic treatment starts, gum disease needs to be under control.

Our Adult Braces

While all orthodontics work by employing constant, gentle pressure on teeth to shift them into proper alignment, there are many different ways in which this can be done. Some of the adult braces that we offer include the following:

  • Metal Braces – This is probably the type of orthodontics that you’re most familiar with. Metal braces feature metal brackets bonded to the fronts of the teeth with a thin wire that runs through each of the brackets. They’re popular for a reason as they offer an economical, yet very effective treatment.
  • Clear Braces – Clear braces work the same way as metal braces, but they have one major difference – the brackets are made of a ceramic material instead of metal. This allows a patient to have a more discreet orthodontic treatment. Unfortunately, these less-apparent brackets are also more susceptible to breakage.
  • Invisalign – Instead of using brackets and wires to straighten a patient’s smile, Invisalign uses clear, plastic aligners to get the job done. While these aligners are removable, you’ll need to keep them in for about 22 hours per day (typically only removing them for eating and cleaning your teeth) for them to work properly. Invisalign offers the most discreet treatment around; others won’t even know that you’re wearing orthodontics!

After Treatment

Whichever treatment you choose, when it’s complete, you’ll need to wear a retainer. While orthodontic treatment is meant to straighten your teeth, the retention stage is designed to keep your teeth in these new positions. The retainer will hold your teeth in place long enough for supporting bone to develop around them. If this isn’t done, the teeth can sometimes shift back to their previous unfavorable positions. Make sure to wear your retainers as instructed so that all the time and hard work that you put in during your treatment won’t go to waste.
