Brace Yourself For Summer
Posted on 06/05/2017

Everyone needs a little break, and having braces shouldn’t hold you back from that. At Wiregrass Orthodontics, we understand that when summer arrives our patients like to engage in a little fun. Whether it’s traveling,  playing sports, or even indulging in a tasty treat, our orthodontists want you to be able to have a little fun. That is why Dr. Howell and his staff at our Ozark, Dothan, and Enterprise locations have compiled a list of tips and tricks to help you take care of your braces and still have a blast during the upcoming summer season!

Traveling

If you plan on going away this summer, no matter if it's a short weekend getaway or a month long vacay, there are a couple things to keep in mind before you travel. It’s important to remember to pack all the necessary orthodontic cleaning tools for when you are away. At Wiregrass Orthodontics, we recommend making a braces travel kit, so you will always be prepared. This could include:

  • Toothbrush
  • Fluoride toothpaste
  • Fluoride mouthwash
  • Dental floss
  • Floss threaders
  • Proxy brushes
  • Orthodontic wax
  • Interdental picks
  • Over-the-counter painkillers
  • Small Mirror
  • Cup or bottle of water

If you are planning to be away for an extended period of time, be sure to schedule an appointment at any of our Ozark, Dothan, and Enterprise locations so our orthodontists can make sure your braces are in good shape before you leave. With these tips, you should be able to maintain good oral health while you’re off enjoying your vacation.

Sports and Other Physical Activities

When the sun shines, it’s hard to not be outside. Whether it's going for a swim, hike, or playing any physical sport it’s important to protect your braces. If you play a physical sport, our orthodontists recommend mouthguards to protect your braces from any contact. Even with activities that may seem harmless, we recommend being cautious since there is always some risk. If you are using Invisalign or a retainer, don’t leave them in hot areas, like the car or the beach, since the heat can cause it to shrink and change shape.

Food

Even though the summer heat may tempt you with some sweet treats, we advise our patients to avoid sugary food and drinks since it can lead to tooth decay and cavities. In addition, our orthodontists recommend staying away from any drinks or foods that can stain your teeth, like coffee, soft drinks, or artificially colored juices. These things can darken the color of your teeth and weaken your enamel.
