Braces vs. Invisalign: How Do They Compare?

When you’re deciding what orthodontic treatment to pursue, it can be a confusing and even intimidating process, trying to decide whether to choose traditional braces or clear braces like Invisalign. At Wiregrass Orthodontics, we provide a great variety of orthodontic treatments, from metal braces and clear braces to orthodontic surgery, so no matter what treatment you’re interested in, we can help! We believe it’s important for patients to be armed the facts in order to make informed decisions on what treatment best fits their lifestyle. That is why we’re here to help you compare the benefits and disadvantages of both traditional braces and Invisalign.

Braces

Traditional metal braces, usually just referred to simply as braces, is one of the oldest, yet still most common forms of orthodontics today. Though often thought of as a form of treatment only for adolescents, braces are becoming increasingly popular with adults, as well. Like any other treatment, braces treatment comes with both advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of Braces

A time-tested method of orthodontics, braces are typically one of the most affordable forms of treatment available. Unlike other forms of treatment that are removable, traditional braces are made up of an archwire held in place by brackets that are affixed to the teeth. Because these braces aren’t removable, you never have to worry about switching out aligner trays or even potentially losing a tray while it’s not in use. This allows for a little less worrisome form of treatment versus some other forms.

Disadvantages of Braces

On the flip, however, the fact that braces are not removable can also easily be seen as a disadvantage. Due to the way they are made, certain foods must be avoided when undergoing a braces treatment in order to prevent damage from occurring to the brackets or wires of braces. Crunchy, hard, tough, or sticky foods can break wires or damage brackets if eaten, meaning your diet will need to be temporarily altered until your treatment has completed. It can also make brushing slightly more challenges, as there are wires and brackets to clean around, where food can easily become stuck.

The potential for brackets and wires to uncomfortably rub against the inside of the mouth also exists, which can lead to some occasional discomfort. However, this is often easily remedied using orthodontic wax to shield the mouth.

If you have further questions about braces, your Dothan, AL area orthodontist at Wiregrass Orthodontics would be happy to help you.

Invisalign Clear Braces

Invisalign is a more recent breakthrough in orthodontic treatment technology and growing increasingly popular among patients. Because Invisalign is a form of clear braces, it’s popular among adult patients, and growing in popularity among younger patients as well. Of course, it comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages to be examined.

Invisalign Clear Braces Advantages

The Invisalign system consists of a series of clear plastic aligner trays that are worn for 20-22 hours per day and switched out roughly every two weeks. As patients move on to the next aligner tray in the series, the teeth are gradually shifted until they reach their desired alignment.

The discreet design of Invisalign is a big advantage to those who may feel self-conscious over the idea of walking around with brackets and wires attached to their teeth. Also, since these trays are removable and fit over the teeth, they are taken out for eating and brushing, meaning no diet changes are necessary and brushing your teeth remains as easy as it ever was. Finally, because the trays are made from a smooth plastic, it also tends to be a more comfortable form of treatment with less mouth irritation than traditional braces.

Disadvantages of Invisalign

The above conveniences may come at a cost, however - literally. Invisalign tends to be more costly than more traditional forms of orthodontic treatment. Because the aligner trays are removable, patients also run the risk of losing track of their aligner trays while they aren’t being worn, which can derail your treatment and end up costing you extra should you lose one and need it replaced.
