Pros & Cons of Manual vs Electric Toothbrushes

Pros & Cons of Manual vs Electric Toothbrushes
Posted on 02/10/2017

When you think of the word “toothbrush” you probably pictures a regular, manual toothbrush. This common tool designed to brush the teeth has been around for ages. However, as technology improved, electric toothbrushes came to be a very popular alternative to the traditional, manual style toothbrushes. So is an electric toothbrush better than the regular type? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each and find out, shall we?

Manual Toothbrush

Pros:

  • Does a great job cleaning the teeth: When proper brushing techniques are used, a manual toothbrush can do an excellent job of cleaning the teeth in just 2 minutes.
  • Many choices in styles: Manual toothbrushes come in many styles with different angled bristles and heads and a multitude of colors and designs.
  • Very portable: It is very simple to travel with a manual toothbrush as it takes up very little room and requires no charging stand or electric outlets to use.
  • No batteries and nothing to charge: This is self-explanatory. :)
  • Cheap to buy: For just a dollar or two, you can purchase a manual toothbrush without busting your budget.

Cons

  • Requires more effort: Since there are no batteries present to power the toothbrush, using a manual brush requires a bit more work.
  • No timer: Manual toothbrushes require you estimate how long your brushing session will last.

Electric Toothbrush

Pros:

  • Ease of use: It is super easy to brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush as you just turn it on, hold the brush at an angle and let it do the work.
  • Great results: An electric toothbrush does a very good job of cleaning the teeth.
  • Fun for kids to use: Children enjoy brushing their teeth with electric toothbrushes, making this type of toothbrush a good choice for any child who finds it a chore to clean their teeth with a regular toothbrush.
  • No guessing: Electric toothbrushes come with timers that stop the brush after two minutes are up so you never have to guess how long you’ve been brushing.

Cons:

  • Must be Charged: You will either have to charge your toothbrush or switch batteries.
  • More Expensive: Electric toothbrushes cost significantly more than manual toothbrushes.
  • Not so Portable: Electric toothbrushes don’t travel as well as their manual counterparts as you must take along the charger and be sure you have a source of electricity to charge it.
  • Breaks Easily: An electric toothbrush can break easily if it’s dropped, requiring more care on your part when using it.
