Resolutions for a Healthier Smile in 2017
Posted on 01/13/2017

At Wiregrass Orthodontic Specialists, we’re committed to providing each and every one of our patients with the ability to achieve the smile of their dreams. Through our high-quality orthodontic treatments, such as braces, clear braces, and Invisalign, we believe we can accomplish this for all those patients in or around Eufaula, Dothan, Ozark, and Enterprise, AL. However, even if you’re already wearing braces, it’s also important to take care of your teeth in other ways if you want to keep your smile healthy. Since the New Year is quickly approaching, we have a few recommendations for resolutions you can make if you’re wearing braces and want an even healthier smile in 2017.

Pay Extra Attention to Oral Hygiene Habits

When you’re wearing braces, it’s vital to pay extra attention to how well you brush. The reason for this is because braces have nooks and crannies where food can get trapped. When food gets trapped in your braces, they can cause damage to your oral hygiene over time in the form of tooth decay and gum disease. This is why it’s important to never stray from a healthy oral hygiene regimen while you’re wearing braces. We actually recommend brushing your teeth once after every meal and once before bed as well. Also, remember to include daily flossing in your oral hygiene habits.

Eat a Tooth-Friendly Diet

In addition to the foods you normally can’t eat with braces (sticky foods and hard foods), you should also limit your intake of two other food groups: acidic foods and sugary foods. Acidic foods may be healthy for your body, but they’re also not so healthy for your teeth because they can damage your tooth enamel when consumed too frequently. Sugary foods can cause tooth decay and they can also lead to a problematic dental condition known as decalcification (noticeable white spots that stick out on your teeth).

Visit Your Local Dentist

Even though you have braces and you’re seeing your orthodontist from time-to-time, it’s still critical for you to visit your dentist. Actually, it’s even more critical than ever to visit while you have braces. As we mentioned, when you’re wearing braces, there are more areas for food particles and bacteria to get trapped. By scheduling a dental appointment, your dentist can make sure that your teeth and braces are clean and also give you advice on the best ways to guarantee that you’re maintaining proper oral hygiene.
