Three Summer Hacks for Maintaining Your Braces While on Vacation

Three Summer Hacks for Maintaining Your Braces While on Vacation
Posted on 07/14/2017

As your provider of Ozark and Dothan braces, we at Wiregrass Orthodontic Specialists want to do all we can to make sure that your orthodontic treatment is as convenient as possible. Since we realize that some patients will be going on vacation soon, we’d like to help make your vacation simpler if you’re wearing braces. Here are three summer hacks you can utilize to better maintain your braces while on vacation.

Avoid Problematic Foods

This one may be easier said than done! On vacations, there always seems to be so many delicious and tempting foods and restaurants out there. Normally, this isn’t a problem in the slightest. However, when you’re wearing braces, you have to avoid certain foods – namely, foods that are hard and foods that are sticky. Make sure to abide by the diet that you’ve put into place before you went on the vacation. No matter how amazing the local delicacy looks, you don’t want to risk eating anything that may harm your braces.

Take a Travel Kit with You

During a vacation, you’ll never be quite sure what to expect. There will be plenty of things to do and plenty of things to see, which can certainly mess with your schedule. Patients with braces are often recommended to brush after every meal, which can be tricky when you really can’t be sure where you’re going to be at any time. Not to worry though! By taking a travel kit with you, you’ll be able to clean your teeth on-the-go whenever you need to. Make sure to pack a travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, and some dental floss in it.

Bring Emergency Orthodontic Supplies as Well

Your travel kit shouldn’t just be for dental supplies – it can be used for emergency orthodontic supplies as well. After all, you won’t know if you’ll find yourself in an emergency. No one does! We recommend taking some extra rubber bands or elastics along with some orthodontic wax. If your braces start to poke you, place some orthodontic wax on the parts that are causing the irritation in order to limit it. Also, make sure to have the phone number of your orthodontist handy. While we may not be able to treat you during an emergency if you’re out-of-town, we can direct you to a close-by children’s orthodontist who can.
