Why Aren’t My Braces Working?

One of the things that we pride ourselves most on here at Wiregrass Orthodontic Specialists is our exceptional braces and Invisalign treatments. When you come to visit your orthodontist in Dothan, Enterprise, and Ozark, AL, we guarantee that you’ll have a safe, convenient, and effective treatment. However, if you undergo orthodontic treatment with us, there’s a possibility that you may find that your braces don’t seem to be moving your teeth. There are a few common reasons as to why your braces may not be working – or at least appear not to be – and we’d like to share them with you.

You Haven’t Been Going to Regular Orthodontic Appointments

The number one reason as to why braces may not be working as intended is likely because a patient isn’t visiting his or her Dothan, Enterprise, and Ozark, AL orthodontist. During these important orthodontic visits, your orthodontist will make sure that the treatment is proceeding as planned and make any adjustments to the wires if necessary. These checkups should be occurring about every four weeks or so. If you’re not going nearly that often, then your teeth won’t be moving as quickly, and the braces will take longer to work.

You Have Poor Oral Hygiene

If you’re not maintaining a good oral hygiene regimen, meaning you’re not keeping your teeth and gums clean and healthy. When this happens, you’re not creating an environment that’s optimal for your teeth to move. This is because poor oral hygiene causes plaque to develop on teeth. This can cause gums to swell, which can interrupt your orthodontic treatment. To keep up a good level of oral hygiene, we recommend brushing and flossing at least twice per day (though four times would be best).

Your Teeth Are Just Moving Slower Than Normal

In the same way that some babies have teeth that appear much later than others, some patients have teeth that move slower than others. Slow moving teeth can happen for a variety of different reasons. It can be because of the shape, size, or position of the teeth and it can also be due to the bite. Teeth that take a while to move aren't anything to be worried about; it simply means treatment will take a bit longer.
